Pain Day

After a couple of rather crap days, I decided I needed some success. The success ended up to be a 19 km hike to the tops of some western hills. Yay me! Afterwards our friend Tina took us on a trip around Miramar. Just without shoes … too much pain!

The breakdown of a foodie

bread aisle

New Zealand is an awesome country, plain and simple. We love it here, we love the people and we love the land. But oh boy, it is soooo hard to be a foodie in New Zealand. Today our desperate quest for good food reached critical mass. We HAD to do something. And we did.

Crating the bike, Part 1: Planning

Intime Logo

As promised, there will be a couple of dedicated post on Rocinante and how to ship her and all our gear to Wellington. The first step was to figure out how to ship the bike and find a forwarding agent.

A couple of Internet searches and inquiries later, one company stood out: InTime Motorradtransporte Hamburg. Behind this impressive name  Continue reading →

Red Rocks walkway

Red Rocks walkway

Today I had to learn the hard way that I am a looooong way from being a good off-road rider. Since our first short ventures on unsealed roads, I was keen to try to tackle the red rocks. On our first time there, we had full paniers and were 2 up, and it was a huge pain. This time, I was eager to do it, all alone and with no luggage. The track there has everything you might encounter and hate on an off-road path: Continue reading →

Falling in love …

Red rocks walk 1

The red rocks walk

… with the land and especially with the  roads! Sooooo marvelous, and it was just the two very short ride outs you can do in 2 hours starting in downtown Wellington.

Nina and I went for two ride outs this week. The first one was on her birthday. Although we missed the sun by maybe 2 hours, it was still gorgeous. I am fairly certain, that this is going to be my new “Hausstrecke”. Continue reading →

Flat and job hunting

Sorry for not updating, it’s been a stressful couple of days. Flo is sick and we’re both quite jetlagged. I’ve forgotten how long it takes to get used to a different time zone. At around 4pm, since yesterday we managed to push it back to 5 pm, we get so incredibly tired that we really can’t do anything productive anymore. We did the smart thing and stayed up till 10pm on the first night but we still have these attacks of tiredness. Continue reading →

Last day in Germany

This is going to be a very short update. We are sitting here with Flo’s grandparents, goodbyes slowly creeping up on us. 6 hours until take off. Minor catastrophies with the bike need to be managed, but I am confident that it will work out. I gained a lot of confidence those last few weeks that things always work out. …

A lovely Ausstand

farewell from my colleagues

Today I gave my customary “Ausstand” at work. A formal party to remember your time at an employer and meet up with fellow and cherished colleagues one last time. I chose German style bakery goodness as the morsel of choice. The shop woman asked me if I had my car close by … hmm … what car?

Somehow, with hurting arms and sweating I managed to get everything where it needed to be. Continue reading →

A little detour

Yesterday a colleague asked me whether I like to go on a ride out with a couple of other co-workers the next day. Our schedule is so tightly packed, but after checking with Nina I nevertheless took the opportunity  to get out  and have a little relief. Even more so since Rocinante will soon be cleaned and crated. Continue reading →
