Happy Guy Fawkes Day!

Flo and I had a great day. We met up with Yasmin, my German/Persian seat neighbour on the plane to Sydney who is visiting NZ at the moment.

First, we had coffee at Floriditas and then took the bus to the top of Mt Vic to get a good view on Wellington. Walking up there is quite…..a pain in the butt so I was happy to take the bus. The view on Wellington was great as it was sunny, only the horizon was too misty to see the South Island.  We decided to walk back down. Had the most yummy passionfruit ice cream afterwards and made it a date to watch the fireworks together at 9 pm.

Unfortunately, the weather decided to be crappy 30min before the fireworks started. We had front row seats at the waterfront, yeah seats, but getting rained on while there is cold wind and a temperature below 10 degrees is somehow nasty. Hot chocolate only helped temporarily. As always, Wellingtonians have quite a different understanding of temperature and keep walking around in t-shirts and shorts/skirts.

The fireworks itself were awesome and they are so nicely visible on the water. We hopped into JJ Murphy’s pub afterwards, to warm up at least a little bit. And I learned: Apparently, they don’t want me as a customer. :p Flo asked me to go buy the first round and I happily went to the counter. I had to come back empty-handed though as they asked me for my ID. My only valid ID at the moment is my passport which I didn’t bring. So I sent Flo to buy his beer himself. Halfway through my coke, I had a craving for wedges with sour cream and went to the counter again. Surely, I must be able to buy wedges without getting IDed. But I did. She asked me about my ID. First, I thought she misunderstood what I was trying to order but no, it was past 10pm and all minors have to leave the pub at that time. O.O  Again, I didn’t really have anything to show so I took my Personalausweis and told her that’s my German ID card. ” Oh, is that a copy of your passport?” O.O No, really, that’s how our national ID cards look like. She didn’t really make it any better by telling me, I should take the IDing as a compliment….
